Temperatures
In July and August, the temperatures in Greece can soar to 40°C (over 100°F) in the shade In the Alps they are up to 35°C. May, June and September, by comparison, will sit within a range of 24°C to 28°C in the Alps and 28°C to 35°C in Greece.
Fortunately, the sea breeze and mountain air make July and August just about bearable, but it can make some activities uncomfortable. September opens up a lot more options especially off the water. Pic Left: Our popular Paddle Cruise with mid-cruise stop over at nearby beach, Sept 2011
More to do off and on the Water
It is fair to say that although May and September can be very hot, these weeks offer walkers and bikers a far greater opportunity to get out and explore the wider area, perhaps take your bikes on a boat trip to nearby Ithaca or Cephalonia for a day long ride. Or circumnavigate the whole island of Lefkada - which is a moderate cycle ride, easily done in a day with plenty of rest stops.
The great thing about the off peak weeks is that the waters are less crowded, and the wind is cleaner. It still blows in the afternoon, but with a little less ferocity! Yes, you can get the odd Force 7 hoolie in the afternoon, but in general, you can expect a Force 2-4 which is perfect for dinghy sailing. Laser bahia sailing in front of hotel surf left Dinghy sailing past our hotel in the morning when the winds are more gentle.
Afternoons come with a sea breeze of Force 4 (or F5) in May and Sept "Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Greece; specifically May, June, September and October." Quote - Lonely Planet, April 2012
